State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR)
The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR®, is the state testing program that was designed to measure the extent to which students have learned and are able to apply the knowledge and skills defined in the state-mandated curriculum standards, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Every STAAR question is directly aligned to the TEKS currently implemented for the grade/subject or course being assessed.

Student Success Initiative
The Student Success Initiative (SSI) grade advancement requirements apply to the  5th grade Reading  and Math STAAR test.   A student will be promoted to middle school only by passing the reading and math test or by unanimous decision of his or her grade placement committee. The committee must determine that the student is likely to perform at grade level after additional instruction. The goal of the SSI is to ensure that all students receive the instruction and support they need to be academically successful in reading and mathematics.
