HEB Excellence in Education Award Winner

Mrs. Frances Gonzalez-Garcia
3rd Grade Teacher, Sam Houston Elementary


On Sunday, May 6, H-E-B announced the statewide winners of the 2012 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards during an awards celebration in Houston. Frances Gonzales-Garcia, 3rd grade teacher, is the winner of  the Leadership Award which honors teachers with 10 to 20 years in the classroom. She received a $10,000 check for herself and a $10,000 grant for the school.  H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards celebrate public school professionals whose dedication inspires a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities.

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
 
The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act requires that all public schools are evaluated for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Sam Houston Elementary is committed to educational excellence. Our mission is to develop hearts and minds.  We want to ensure that every student succeeds both academically and socially. We also believe that a strong partnership between school and home is one of the best methods to ensure student success.
 

STAAR Testing
 
3rd and 4th Grade Math and Reading Tests
5th Grade Science Tests
 
3rd and 4th grade students will take the STAAR Math test on April 24 and Reading on April 25.  5th grade students will take the STAAR Science test on April 26. 
It is important for students to be relaxed, rested and ready for the test.  Here are some tips for the testing day:
  • Get at least 10 hours of sleep the night before each test.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast.
  • Dress comfortably, bring a sweater or light jacket if you tend to get cold in class.
  • Arrive on time to school and class.
  • Read test directions and questions carefully.
  • Take a few deep breaths to help relax.
  • Think positively.  Tell yourself, "I can do it!"
 If you have any questions about testing, please contact your child's teacher at 878-2520.
 

End of Year Report Cards   

End of Year Report Cards will be issued on Friday, June 1st, 2012.  This is the last day of school for students attending Tier 2 of OFYP.  Report cards will be sent home with these students.   

Report cards will be available for pickup in the school office from June 1st - 6th for any students who are no longer in school due to early dimissal in May.

We have finally completed STAAR testing for this school year.  It takes many people to prepare our students for these tests.  From our hard working staff members to our amazing parents, we thank you for supporting our students in every way possible.  We especially want to commend our students for their hard work as well. 
 
As the end of the school year nears we want to keep you posted on various activities so that you won't miss out on the end of the school year excitement.  Please check our website for updates.
